Sam Altman’s Iris-Scanning Firm Cuts Jobs

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's $2.5bn biometric identity venture, Tools for Humanity, told employees on 8 Jun it had begun cutting jobs, Business Insider reported.

Tools for Humanity is the company behind Worldcoin (WLD), the iris-verification project now branded as World. Its Orb device scans users' irises to generate a unique digital identity code.

In the email, the firm, which was founded in 2019 and employs more than 500, said it would "make changes to some roles and teams across the company," Business Insider said. There were no details on the number of job cuts.

The email said details would be disclosed in a town hall meeting on 9 Jun.

The firm has verified nearly 18mn people through the Orb as of April. Backers include Andreessen Horowitz and Bain Capital, but it has faced regulatory scrutiny from Spain to Kenya, with Thai authorities raiding an iris-scanning site in October 2025.
