Ripple, the blockchain payments company behind XRP, made a strategic investment in Notabene, a New York-based crypto compliance company, and will put its dollar-backed stablecoin Ripple USD (RLUSD) into Notabene's business payments platform. The size of the investment was not disclosed.
Ripple Invests in Compliance Firm Notabene to Widen RLUSD Use
Notabene said in a 23 Jul statement that the two were also exploring how its payment authorization tools could complement Ripple Payments, Ripple's cross-border transfer service.
Travel Rule to payments
Notabene built its business on the Travel Rule, an anti-money laundering standard requiring institutions to pass sender and recipient details alongside a transfer. The company, founded in 2020, said more than 2,300 institutions in at least 100 jurisdictions use its network, which handles more than $2tn in annualized transaction volume.
The investment gives Notabene a stablecoin partner for a payments business it has been building on top of that compliance work. Notabene Flow, introduced in September 2025, lets institutions coordinate, authorize and schedule payments between companies; RLUSD becomes one of the assets moving through it.
"They need to know who is on the other side," said Pelle Braendgaard, Notabene's co-founder and chief executive, of institutions already committed to stablecoin payments.
Distribution channel for RLUSD
For Ripple, the deal gives RLUSD a route into banks, custodians and payment firms that already run counterparty checks through Notabene, rather than into retail trading. RLUSD remains far smaller than Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC), which together account for most of the stablecoin supply.
Jack McDonald, Ripple's senior vice president of stablecoin, said institutional adoption "requires trusted identity, compliance and transaction authorization before value moves."
Ripple introduced RLUSD in December 2024. Both the US GENIUS Act and the EU's MiCA rules set licensing and reserve requirements for stablecoin issuers.
