Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate in Illinois, prevailing over a significant $10mn opposition campaign funded by cryptocurrency interest groups. Stratton defeated Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly in the race to succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin, according to Associated Press projections.

The primary served as a high-stakes test of the digital asset industry’s ability to influence congressional races in the 2026 election cycle. Despite the scale of the intervention, Stratton maintained a decisive lead in Cook County and Chicago, bolstered by the endorsement of Governor JB Pritzker. The result suggests that established local political networks and party endorsements remain dominant factors in Democratic strongholds, regardless of external financial pressure.

Crypto spending tests political influence

The industry-backed intervention was led by the crypto-focused super PAC Fairshake, which deployed approximately $9.9mn in advertising opposing Stratton. This spending reflected a broader strategy by digital asset firms to engage with both major parties to support candidates aligned with specific policy priorities, including stablecoin regulation and expanded access to financial infrastructure.

The Illinois race carried national significance as the next Congress is expected to play a central role in drafting comprehensive digital asset legislation. Industry groups had targeted the Illinois primary as a primary battleground to shape the composition of the Senate ahead of these legislative debates.

Limits of industry intervention

While the cryptocurrency industry has significantly increased its financial involvement in US elections, the outcome highlights the challenges of converting capital into electoral results. Political analysts noted that voter dynamics and the influence of entrenched party figures provided a buffer against the targeted advertising blitz.

Stratton enters the general election in a strong position in a state that has historically favoured Democratic candidates. She will face Republican Don Tracy in November. The failure of the Fairshake campaign to unseat Stratton is expected to trigger a reassessment of industry spending strategies in future primary contests where local party support is consolidated.
