Strategy, Inc. (MSTR), which oversees the largest crypto corporate treasury, has moved to ease investor concerns over the limitations and strength of its business model by explicitly isolating its net Bitcoin exposure attributable to common equity holders.
Strategy Overhauls Treasury Metrics as Market Downturn Pressures Model
The No.1 Bitcoin stockpiler announced the changes following extended declines in digital asset valuations, with Bitcoin treading water around the $63,000 mark, about half of October's all-time-high. The new methodology replaces gross holding figures with net figures accounting for senior debt and preferred share obligations.
The reporting shift comes amid an extended crypto bear market that has severely tested corporate balance sheets relying on digital asset reserves. Declining token valuations and falling equity prices have intensified market scrutiny over the long-term viability of debt-leveraged treasury strategies. By providing net equity metrics, Strategy is looking to address growing institutional questions surrounding capital structure risk and debt service capabilities during prolonged industry downturns.
Reframing equity leverage
As part of its financial reporting revamp, Strategy introduced a net reserve framework that deducts senior liabilities from gross holdings.
The business has previously highlighted its total treasury size without fully isolating the claims of convertible debt and preferred stock. Those senior instruments rank ahead of common equity in liquidation scenarios and absorb a substantial portion of balance sheet value.
The adjusted framework also incorporates a net exposure calculation per share to evaluate true equity backing. By deducting senior leverage, the metric provides a more conservative assessment of common share value. The firm also redefined its amplification metric to measure how corporate debt magnifies risk for common stockholders during negative market cycles.
Sustainability and debt burden
The reporting changes highlight the mounting operational hurdles created by corporate crypto leverage. To address solvency concerns, the framework introduced an annual breakeven growth rate for its core asset holdings. This metric defines the minimum sustained appreciation required for reserves to cover recurring dividend and interest liabilities.
Shares in Strategy have plunged about 80% since their July 2025 high, closing at $91.67 on Friday.
