Moldovan authorities have launched a criminal investigation into an electoral breach during the 2025 parliamentary elections, in which stablecoins were used to fund local politicians.
Moldova Probes Crypto Election Fraud, Moldpres Reports
According to the national news agency Moldpres, the National Anticorruption Center (CNA) discovered that a local citizen used foreign capital to finance candidates illegally. The individual received stablecoins, converted them into cash, and subsequently distributed it to certain candidates, the Moldpres report said.
Sanctioned organizations
The CNA revealed that the capital originated from several criminal organizations currently facing international sanctions. The investigators identified digital wallets that processed over $107mn in USDT between 2023 and 2025, with the funds being transferred from two exchanges in Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
The criminal investigation will target the local citizen and the specific candidates who received the illicit cash, as authorities determine the legal consequences for those transacting with sanctioned entities.
