Matt Damon Returns to Crypto Spotlife

Actor Matt Damon, who starred in high-profile celebrity promotions for Crypto.com that epitomized the 2021 crypto hype, stepped back into the digital assets spotlight, this time pitching crypto as a funding tool for Water.org, the safe-water nonprofit he co-founded.

In a LinkedIn post, cross-border crypto payments firm Ripple said Damon will appear at its Ripple Swell conference in New York City on 27–29 Oct.

Crypto.com campaign loses steam

Damon's glossy Crypto.com campaign, which first aired in October 2021, was built around the slogan 'Fortune Favors the Brave,' with the Oscar-winning actor urging viewers to embrace crypto as part of a bold, forward-looking future.

But the promotion arrived at the height of the crypto boom and quickly lost momentum as prices weakened and the endorsement era gave way to scepticism. The Ripple Swell appearance marks a different kind of crypto pitch from the actor: payments infrastructure for humanitarian work, rather than a consumer trading platform.

Stablecoin powers charity work

"He's going to tell you how Water.org is leveraging Ripple Payments and RLUSD to accelerate money movement and drive real-world impact across Asia, Africa, and Latin America," the post said, referring to its annual flagship conference.

Ripple Payments is the firm's cross-border settlement product, which uses XRP for liquidity. RLUSD, the Ripple stablecoin, is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and backed by cash and cash equivalents.
