President Donald Trump has officially announced the nomination of Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The announcement, made via Truth Social on Friday morning, concludes months of speculation regarding the leadership of the world’s most influential central bank. Warsh, 55, previously served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors between 2006 and 2011.

A return to the Fed

The nomination signals a significant shift in the administration's relationship with the central bank. Powell, whose term expires in May, has been a frequent target of presidential criticism over interest rate policy. In his announcement, Trump expressed high confidence in his pick:

I have known Kevin for a long period of time, and have no doubt that he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best. On top of everything else, he is “central casting,” and he will never let you down.

Reports and the confirmation of Warsh's appointment have not provoked any volatility in financial markets, though his past criticisms of the Fed's expanded balance sheet and his recent alignment with the White House’s calls for lower interest rates suggest a potential "regime change" in monetary strategy.

Warsh must now face a confirmation process in the Senate. While he enjoys support from many Republican lawmakers, some members of the Senate Banking Committee have already indicated that the process may be complicated by ongoing investigations into the central bank's previous policy decisions.
