Brazil’s Electrobras Starts Bitcoin Mining Operation

Brazilian electricity company Electrobras it set to launch a bitcoin mining operation in Bahia, according to a local media report. 

Exploring energy options

In an interview with local outlet Exame, Juliano Dantas, Executive Vice President of Innovation, R&D, Digital, and IT, at Electrobras explains that the company aims to use explore the energy demands for high-end computing, starting with a crypto mining operation. Electrobras is the largest power utility company in Latin America.

Currently, the focus of the project is not how many bitcoin the mine produces but rather gaining deeper understanding of the energy needs of the technology and the potential to scale up in the future, for both Electrobras and its customers. Dantas stated that the company “wants to know what the best solutions are to improve the energy supply for this type of operation."

Brazil as a computing hub

Dantas states that Electrobras is operating with a long-term view and aims to pursue their goal of putting Brazil on the map for high-end computing operations. “Brazil has enormous potential and brings together more elements that, combined, generate a greater competitive advantage, which goes beyond pure energy,” he added.
